Italian Anti-Mafia Department could assist Bulgaria’s Specialized Investigation Unit
The idea was discussed during a meeting between Italian Ambassador to Bulgaria His Excellency Dr. Stefano Banazzo and Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov
Italian Ambassador to Bulgaria H.E. Stefano Benazzo had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov. Both discussed the recommendations of the European Commission Report on Progress in Bulgaria under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, which concerns corruption and organized crime. Minister Tsvetanov acquainted his guest with the short- and long-term measures outlined by the Ministry of Interior as well as with the setting up in Bulgaria of a Specialized Investigation Unit that will include officials from the Interior Ministry, the Prosecutor’s Office and the State Agency for National Security. H.E. Stefano Benazzo noted that Italian Anti-Mafia Department could give Bulgaria’s specialized inter-department unit consulting support and exchange best practices with its Bulgarian colleagues. Both highly-ranking officials also talked about strengthening police cooperation for countering transborder crime, as well as joint projects in which Bulgaria can draw on Italy’s law enforcement experience.
