An organized crime group, dealing with cigarettes smuggling, was busted in the frames of a special police operation codenamed “The Cigarettemen”
Seven people have been arrested during the police operation on the territory of Sofia and Varna
The group was dealing with large-scale illegal cigarettes trafficking of more than 22,000,000 pieces in 2011. According to initial calculations, the group has caused a financial harm to the state of more than BGN 8 million.
During the raids carried out in the frames of the operation 35 cell phones, SIM cards, a tablet and a portable computer, as well as lists of amounts of cigarettes and reports of the realized activities have been seized.
Each of group’s members was in charge of a specific activity. Two of the members used to operate mostly in Greece, where they negotiated the purchase of cigarettes without excise stamps and secured the smuggling through the border. Two other people used to coordinate and control the transportation of the cigarettes. Two people were driving the vehicles used for the crimes scheme.
In the frames of the operation against the crime scheme of the group the police officers have busted several cigarettes deliveries in Sofia and Varna. The preliminary estimation of the harm caused to the state budget amounts to around BGN 8 million.
The seven people detained in the operation have been put under 24-hours arrest.
